Boneless Splendor of Jiufeng: Yun Shouping and the Transcendent Art Realm
Yun Shouping, a distinctive luminary among the Six Great Painters of the Early Qing Dynasty, earned unparalleled acclaim for his boneless flower paintings, whose influence endures through ages. Founder of the Changzhou Painting School, he was a legendary artistic genius, hailed by the saying "His works grace every household south and north of the Yangtze".
Born in Changzhou, Jiangsu, he traveled extensively along the Grand Canal throughout his life. The tender charm of water towns permeated his brush and ink, and the inclusive temperament of the canal fostered his broad artistic perspective. Breaking away from rigid traditional stroke rules, he laid on lucid ink and pigments directly. Flowers and leaves take on vivid lifelike charm amid merging water and color, standing as the pinnacle of traditional Chinese aesthetics.
The exhibition assembles 97 precious authentic works sourced from eight renowned museums: the Palace Museum, Tianjin Museum, Nanjing Museum, Suzhou Museum, Changzhou Museum, Wuxi Museum, Hunan Museum and Beijing Art Museum. It fully showcases his creations including flowers, landscapes, fruits and vegetables, calligraphy as well as painting theories.
Exhibition Period: February 14 – May 18, 2026
