Object Acquisition

The Yangzhou China Grand Canal Museum is situated in the Sanwan Scenic Area of Yangzhou, covering a total build-up area of approximately 79,000 square meters. It was officially opened to the public on June 16, 2021. As a thematic museum that caters to needs for tourism, leisure, and exchanges, the CGCM comprehensively exhibits the value of world cultural heritage across the entire Grand Canal throughout different historical periods and the beautiful life brought about by the canal. It is an iconic museum built as part of the Grand Canal National Cultural Park.

The museum’s evolution is intricately linked to the dedication of its staff and the unwavering support and enthusiasm from individuals across all spheres of society. To enhance the content and presentation of exhibitions, as well as to further museum education and research, we are seeking relevant collections from the wider community. The announcement is hereby made as follows:

I. Acquisition Scope

The acquisition scope primarily focuses on artifacts and materials related to the basin of the Grand Canal of China, which includes the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the Grand Canal of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, and the Eastern Zhejiang Canal.

II. Objects to Be Acquired

(I) Artifacts that serve as witnesses to the history of the canal

1. Artifacts that reflect the development, utilization, and management of the Grand Canal;

2. Artifacts that offer insights into the social development, customs, residential architecture, religious beliefs, cultural practices, and artistic heritage along the Grand Canal;

3. Artifacts that reflect major historical events or revolutionary activities related to the Grand Canal or have relevant important commemorative or educational significance;

4. Important physical evidence that reflects regional exchanges between northern and southern China and between the eastern and western China;

5. Artifacts that reflect notable figures along the Grand Canal and include their manuscripts, letters, inscriptions, and seals (including imperial seals);

6. Artifacts that reflect water transportation throughout different historical periods;

7. Artifacts that showcase the court and royal life during the Ming and Qing Dynasties;

8. Artifacts that illustrate the evolution of the ecological landscape along the Grand Canal across various historical epochs and highlight the advancements in the modern development of the Grand Canal’s ecological civilization;

9. Artifacts that reflect other famous canals in the world and the cities along them.

(II) Artworks

1. Fine arts and crafts and representative works of intangible cultural heritage inheritors along the Grand Canal throughout different historical periods;

2. Tools and other physical materials that reflect craftsmanship along the Grand Canal throughout different historical periods.

(III) Archive materials

1. Physical materials that can be used to explore the history of the Grand Canal such as ancient books, stone inscriptions and rubbings of inscriptions, archival documents, currency notes and stamped artifacts;

2. Physical or digital materials that can be used to explore the history of the Grand Canal such as old photos, images, and audio and video recordings.

(IV) Other physical materials

1. Specimens of animals and plants that illustrate the natural ecology along the Grand Canal;

2. Scientifically valuable specimens and fossils found along the Grand Canal.

III. Acquisition Methods

1. The CGCM will acquire objects in strict compliance with the Law of the People's Republic of China on Protection of Cultural Relics, the Implementing Regulations of the Law of the People's Republic of China on Protection of Cultural Relics, and the Regulation on Museums, and other relevant laws and regulations.

2. The primary methods of acquiring objects are through transfers, donations, and purchases.

3. Any interested party is asked to provide a detailed account of their collections containing the name, era, size, pictures, and any other information about the collections. Kindly complete the information and send it to the email address provided at the end of the text for initial selection.

4. Upon the decision to accept their collections, institutional and individual donors will receive donation certificates or collection certificates. They will be duly recognized and rewarded in a fitting manner for their contributions.

5. By submitting a collection, its provider explicitly agrees that the CGCM owns the collection, and the right to use it as stipulated in the Copyright Law of the People’s Republic of China. The CGCM has the right to publish, reproduce, use and modify the work.

IV. Acquisition Description

1. Providers shall ensure lawful sources of their collections and bear legal and economic responsibility for the legitimacy of the collection.

2. The CGCM will finalize its collection decisions within one month upon receipt of the collection information and will promptly inform all collectors who have expressed their intention to contribute via email or telephone. All collection information will not be returned.

3. This object collection announcement will remain valid indefinitely.
