The Grand Canal of China stands out as a pivotal water conservation endeavor in Chinese history, serving as the economic and political lifeline across various dynasties. In terms of canal upkeep and administration, the enforcement and execution of regulations governing grain transportation held significant importance. This emphasis is evidenced by a wealth of documentation in official histories, regional accounts, and ancient texts detailing laws and rules, along with numerous inscriptions along the Grand Canal.
To present these inscriptions in an intuitive and diverse manner, the CGCM organized online exhibition Inscriptions along the Grand Canal – Rubbing inscriptions of the China Grand Canal Museum. This exhibition showcased 38 exquisite rubbing inscriptions found along the canal. It highlights the history and culture of the ancient Grand Canal through various themes such as “Efforts to Protect the Caohe River”, “Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong’s Southern Inspection Tours”, “Outstanding Ancient Hydrologists”, and “Grain Transport Management”.
